Professor Ajay Navaria spoke on "Writing Resistance: How narratives from the Margins are forged".

Gandhi-Ambedkar Study Circle of St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, organized a panel discussion on "Writing Resistance: How narratives from the Margins are forged". Prof. Ajay Navaria and Prof. Ivy Hansdak were the speakers. Dr. Navaria raised some points in the session which are as follows:

- माफ कीजिएगा मेरी मंशा किसी को दुःख पहुंचाने की नहीं है लेकिन क्या करें स्थापित (मौजूदा) सामाजिक ढांचे से आंख भी तो नहीं मूंद सकते। तथाकथित उच्च जाति जिसे हम अंग्रेज़ी में so called "upper caste" कहते है (सवर्ण कह लीजिए), इन्हें शुरू से ही उनके उच्च जाति से जुड़े हुए संबंधों, प्राप्त विशेषाधिकारों, सुविधाओं के बारे में बताया जाता है, जो इन्हें एक प्रकार का साहस प्रदान करता है।

वहीं दूसरी तरफ हम देखते है की निचले पायदान पर आने वाले लोग जिनका संबंध so called "lower castes" से है, ऐसे लोग इन सभी स्थापित मान्यताओं को अपना भाग्य समझकर स्वीकार करते चले जाते है।

ये वर्गीकरण मान्यताओं का एक हिस्सा है, जिन्हें आमतौर पर समाज में अपनाया जाता रहा है। हम ना चाहते हुए भी इनसे मुंह नहीं फेर सकते, इनका खंडन नहीं कर सकते क्योंकि यहीं समाज की सच्चाई भी है।

("किसी मान्यता को नज़रंदाज़ न करना" और "किसी मान्यता को स्वीकार करने" में अंतर होता है। तो हम इन मान्यताओं को सुनते, समझते और देखते इसलिए है, ताकि इनका आलोचनात्मक विश्लेषण कर सकें, इसलिए नहीं कि हम इन स्थापित मान्यताओं को अपना रहे है या इनका खंडन नहीं कर रहे है। - Rahul, my personal argument.)

- मेरा सवाल आप सभी लोगों से है, खास तौर से उच्च वर्ग में आने वाले लोगों से कि "why do they hate people belonging to lower castes?"

ख़ासकर शहरों में ये देखने को मिलता है कि "People in urban areas belonging to upper castes hate especially the "DALITS". Why?

- The problem is not the RESERVATION, we have to understand its historical background; its roots are there in some remote past, that is what we need to read, understand and analyse critically.

- There is one thing common in all Hindu scriptures and that is the system of "SOCIAL STRATIFICATION".

- प्रतिरोध (RESISTANCE) शुरू होता है, चेतना संपन्न शिक्षित लोगों से।

- लड़ाई हमेशा से 'संसाधनों पर कब्ज़े' को लेकर रही है, तब भी और अब भी।

- हर दौर में यही देखा गया है कि सबसे ज़्यादा विचारक और बुद्धिजीवी, मध्यम वर्ग से पैदा होते है।

Ajay Navaria is a Professor in the Hindi department at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi. He is the author of two collections of short stories, Patkatha aur Anya Kahaniyan (2006) and Yes Sir(2012), and a novel, Udhar ke Log (2009). Unclaimed Terrain (2013), an anthology of his short stories translated into Englis, has been critically acclaimed.
