Gagan Gill speaks about Nirmal Verma and his writings on the occasion of his 96th birth anniversary.

• निर्मल के लेखन में आपको बच्चे भी मिल जायेंगे। दिलचस्प यह है कि निर्मल जानते थे कि कब एक बच्चे को लेखक का रूप दे देना है, कब वो लेखक की भाषा का इस्तेमाल करेगा। He knew very well when and how to place the soul of a writer in a child.

• I am not a representative of Nirmal, I am his wife.

• जो व्यक्ति निर्मल को पढ़ता है, वो खुले दिमाग का होगा या पढ़ते-पढ़ते हो जाएगा।

• Inside Nirmal resides many Nirmal.

• हम जितनी विधाओं में लिखते है, जितने प्रकार का लेखन करते है; हम उतने ही तरह-तरह के व्यक्तियों से घिरे होते है।

• निर्मल की जटिलताओं (complexities) को समझने के लिए, उन्हें उनके ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ (historical context) में देखा जाना चाहिए।

• Nirmal was morally a very upright person. वो झूठ नहीं बर्दाश्त करते थे। साथ ही उनमें हिम्मत थी ख़ुद को डिमोलिश (demolish) होते हुए देखने की। मेरे द्वारा की गई आलोचना को वो बहुत ध्यान से सुनते थे।

• You cannot compartmentalize and brand a writer in a very simplistic manner. You can demolish Nirmal, but with some logical sense. You cannot simply say that he was against "वामपंथ" and all. Till the end, he was not able to support a single ideology wholeheartedly.

• अच्छे लेखक की परतें उसके गुज़र जाने के, कई और वर्ष बीत जाने के बाद खुलती है। चले जाने के बाद कम वर्षों के भीतर लोग आलोचना अधिक करते है, तरह-तरह के टैग में उन्हें बांधे जाने का प्रयास किया जाता है। गंभीर लेखक की सही समझ और परख समय की मांग करती है। मुझे तो वो लेखक ही संदिग्ध लगता है जिसको उसके जीवन काल में ही समझ लिया गया हो।

• ऐसा खरा आदमी मैंने नहीं देखा। ना उसने झूठ जिया, ना उसने झूठ लिखा। एक पत्नी होने के नाते, मैं यह कह सकती हूं कि मैंने सोने जैसे आदमी के साथ अपना जीवन जिया। जो रास्ता निर्मल ने चुना, वो जानते थे कि इसमें आर्थिक रूप से समस्याएं आएंगी। हमने आर्थिक रूप से बुरा समय भी देखा, लेकिन कभी एक-दूसरे को महसूस नहीं होने दिया।

• Professor Sanjeev Kumar argued that "I think people who read Nirmal are more tolerant and patient, as his writings sensitize people, and such people have a tendency of acceptance towards society and diverse thoughts." Vandana Rag added to this argument- "निर्मल का साहित्य संवेदनाओं और सहिष्णुता के भावों से भरा है, जो पाठकों को संवेदनशील और सहिष्णु बनाता है। Nirmal teaches us craft and language that can be used in a text. He doesn't make boundaries between the languages."

Professor Sanjeev further asked Gagan Gill to share her views on this. To this question, Gagan Ji replied, "There is a very small type of literature that makes you intolerant, as one of the roles of literature is to make people more tolerant. Literature sensitizes people; this is half the truth. You feel this way only whenever you are with the text; once you come out of the zone, things change. Human beings change only when they see themselves in a mirror, when they see their inner selves."
